Come pay homage to fellow Nashvillian and late, great ‘Pinup Queen Supreme,’ Bettie Page, who left an indelible mark within the annals of popular culture as a constant muse to all who discover her.
A graduate of both Hume Fogg and Peabody College (now Vanderbilt), she taught at Harpeth Hall before moving to New York to seek a life of greater fulfillment. While some might argue the results of this search to not be the case (and many did at that time), the fulfillment certainly came later when legions of young fans, both men and women, sprung up all over the world in the late 80s and early 90s. Bettie Page began to inspire, first young males and aspiring artists of her day, and much later young women, who found her girl-next-door looks and risque attire to be an iconic source of rebellion.
But perhaps why so many people continue to discover and rediscover this penultimate pinup lies beneath the obvious. With every click of the shutter, Bettie Page would summon the beauty that lay within her, and it would radiate outward: innocence, excitability, happiness, surprise. They were expressions which, more than any other model of her time, were seemingly the genuine article. Her fame rose quickly, and just before her stardom could become official, she retired in 1957.
It could be argued that the qualities which set Ms. Page apart from all the rest, and ultimately caused her to sidestep the limelight, were the very values which are inherently instilled in every Nashville native or long-time resident. In addition to traditional portraiture of this marvelous muse, it’s this premise which artist Brenan would like to quietly explore.
