There is perhaps no other living talent that is more pervasive in the collective global psyche than the pop sensation otherwise known as Madonna Louise Ciccone.
Her music, her dance, her style and her sheer determination forces The Material Girl to still remain in the public consciousness—and she has done so longer than most any other performer.
Two weeks from tomorrow, on Thursday April 5th, Art by Brenan returns to Rumba for a very special show entitled, “Madonna: Like an Art Show” with works of, or inspired by, the many reinventions of Madge herself.
The term “icon” we so now loosely use actually originated from altar paintings of religious figures found in niches of European cathedrals (and soon after, the world) during the height of Catholicism. The artist finds it both entertaining and ironic that a secular entertainer bred out of Catholicism—and with the name of a religious icon already—has actually become an icon (of popular culture) herself. Without intention, it almost seems as if she’s single-handedly reclaimed the true definition of an icon due to her usage of religious imagery and undertones for her own brand of controversy. And, though this show is merely a reflection of one entertainer’s career and is secular in nature, crowd participation at the opening of the show would be very much like the pilgrimages made centuries ago in order to see artifacts and religious icons found in the niches and altarpieces of wonderous cathedrals such as St. Peter’s Basilica, Chartre or Notre Dame.
As always, there will be added incentive to attend an Art By Brenan opening, and the riches of Rumba include: prime patio seating, drink and food specials, the best mojitos on the planet, and DJ Spun who will be spinning a bevy of classic Madonna hits, plus original compositions of Madonna tracks mashed-up with sick hip-hop beats.
The opening date is Thursday, April 5th from 5:30 till whenever.
